Programs and Education

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is dedicated to providing learner-centred educational programs that meet the health-care needs of our communities. Our goal is to graduate qualified, compassionate and inquisitive practitioners and researchers accomplished in health-care delivery and scholarship.

We are committed to serving patients and populations by providing a rich interdisciplinary environment of learning, practice, research and public service for all our students and faculty.

  • Diploma and B.Sc. in Dental Hygiene

    The dynamic and student-centered learning environment allows students to earn a diploma or BSc with specialization.

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery

    This four-year (11-term) undergraduate program leads to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.

  • MD Program

    A four-year program leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD).

  • MD/PhD

    Students obtain the MD degree and a PhD degree while preparing for a career as clinician-scientists.

  • MD with Special Training in Research

    The MD with Special Training in Research (STIR) designation program encourages awareness of the importance of basic and clinical biomedical research to the practice of medicine.

  • MD/MBA

    A program of combined study which permits highly qualified students to earn both the MD and MBA degrees within five years.

  • Medical Laboratory Science

    A professional program designed for students to acquire general certification from the CSMLS.

  • Postgraduate Medical Education

    With 54 fully accredited residency training programs, UAlberta medical students can obtain certification from the CFPC and RCPSC.

  • Graduate Studies

    There are numerous opportunities for both Master's and PhD studies in diverse disciplines.

  • Continuing Education

    A variety of continuing education programs are available to help health-care providers challenge their skills and remain current.

  • Faculty Development

    Consultation, collaboration, and other supports to help faculty members achieve success and satisfaction in their academic roles.

  • Support for Programs and Faculty

    Service and support for faculty, educational programs and scholars.

  • Visiting Students

    More than 100 elective opportunities in various specialties are available to Canadian undergraduate medical students.

  • Alberta International Medical Graduate

    International medical graduates can earn certification through the CFPA or the RCPSC.

  • Health Professions Education Scholarship

    Take a scholarly approach to education practice and/or help in the practice of educational scholarship.

  • Arts & Humanities in Health & Medicine

    Recognition of the many relationships that exist between the arts, humanities, social sciences and medicine.
