Faculty Recognition

Glen Jickling, Department of Medicine and member of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI) is one of the inaugural winners of the U of A Killam Accelerator Award.


Sandra Davidge, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and executive director of the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) was selected by the Canada Foundation for Innovations program to receive the John R Evans Leaders Fund. Read more.

Alumni Innovation Award

Cardiac surgeons who co-created a revolutionary organ support and repair device called Ex-Vivo Organ Support System (EVOSS™). This Alberta-made technology buys more time for organs to be assessed, repaired and transported, giving the potential to double or even triple the number of viable donor organs worldwide.

Distinguished Alumni Award

Scientific director of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. Among the world's most distinguished researchers and consultants in the field of pulmonary health, including the study of tuberculosis, lung cancer and asthma.


Steven Knudsen, '84 BSc(CompEng), '87 MSc

Alumni Service Award

A dedicated volunteer, computer scientist, student mentor, innovative thinker and entrepreneur. Helped establish the Peer of Peers Award and The Pod, a program supporting students' entrepreneurial initiatives by providing interdisciplinary out-of-class learning and professional development opportunities.


Gary Lobay, '68 MD

Alumni Honour Award

The first microsurgeon at the U of A and among the first in Western Canada. Pioneer in the field of free tissue transfers, microsurgical nerve repair and limb replantation. Best known for performing the first limb replantation in Western Canada.


Tony Mok, '82 BMedSc, '84 MD

Alumni Honour Award

Driver of precision health. Chair of the Department of Clinical Oncology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Conducted multiple multinational studies that established the global standard on personalized biomarker and molecular targeted therapy for patients with lung cancer.


Students, Residents and Trainees

Qutuba Karwi (supervisor Gary Lopaschuk) received the July 2019 Med Star Award for Fellows from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.


Kendra Houston, postgraduate trainee in the Department of Emergency Medicine, was named Trainee of the Year by the Misericordia Community Hospital Emergency Medicine department.


PhD candidate Kezhou Wu (supervisors Nadr Jomha and Janet Elliott), Department of Surgery, received the Best Student Poster award at the 56th Annual Meeting of the Society for Cryobiology in San Diego, California.


Da In Kim, School of Dentistry, won first place in the student research competition at the CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program during the 2019 Canadian Dental Association Convention at the 2019 Saskatchewan Oral Health Conference (2019 CDA at SOHC) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan September 12-14, 2019.


Congratulations to MD student Marissa Nahirney on receiving the 2019 Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine. Read more.
