The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is celebrating a record-breaking number of faculty members inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) as fellows. The induction ceremony, which is a portion of the annual CAHS Forum and General Meeting, took place at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa on Sept. 18, 2014.

Not only is the faculty celebrating an application success rate of 100 per cent, but also its highest fellow induction number in history. Seven faculty members joined CAHS during the ceremony, more than doubling the previous record of three inductees in a single year.

Douglas Miller, dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, was one of the applicants who were successfully inducted as a CAHS fellow. Other inductees include Barbara Ballermann, chair of the Department of Medicine; Sandra Davidge, director of the Women & Children's Health Research Institute; David Evans, vice-dean, research; Evangelos Michelakis, professor in the Division of Cardiology; Richard Rachubinski, chair of the Department of Cell Biology; and Brian Rowe, professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Alexander Clark, associate dean, research in the Faculty of Nursing, was also successful in his application, making a total of eight inductees from the University of Alberta.

CAHS provides assessment and advice on matters relating to health while uniting leading health professionals throughout the country. To qualify for fellowship, individuals must be nominated and pass a peer review to ensure they contribute significantly to the status of Canadian health care. Fellowship with CAHS is considered one of the greatest honours in the Canadian health sciences community.
