Funding opportunities available through the Office of Research

Walter Mackenzie Visiting Speaker Fund
Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry

The Visiting Speaker fund is sponsored by the Walter Mackenzie Visiting Professorship Endowment and is administered by the Office of Research, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. The Visiting Speaker fund will support costs associated with selected visits to the University of Alberta by established scientists with excellent records in biomedical and health research. Funds for this program are limited and not all qualified Visiting Speakers will receive funding for their visits. Decisions of the Visiting Speaker Committee are final. The Applicants hosting the visit are expected to seek other sources of support in addition to applying to this fund.

Application Process

  • Deadline dates are the first Monday of every month.
  • Submit one signed original application to the Office of Research, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, 2-13 HMRC.
  • If you require assistance or additional information, please contact Vera Missen at vera.missen@ualberta.ca

University Hospital Foundation Medical Research Competition

The University Hospital Foundation encourages applications from new investigators (those within five years of first academic appointment). Approximately two-thirds of funding will be targeted towards this group.

Established investigators may also apply, and are especially encouraged to participate in projects as co-investigator(s)/collaborator(s) with new investigators.

It is expected that project funding will form the basis for subsequent and simultaneous applications for peer-reviewed external funding. Projects currently funded by another source will be given lower priority.

Conference/Symposium Fund

The Conference/Symposium Fund supports international, national, and provincial conferences/symposiums that contribute to scholarship and are sponsored or hosted by the University within Alberta. The funding for the Conference Fund is provided by the Office of the Vice-President (Research) and is administered by the Office of Research, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

To ensure maximum use and distribution of the limited University of Alberta funds available, applicants are expected to seek other sources of support in addition to applying to this fund.
