The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta is dedicated to providing learner-centered educational programs that meet the health-care needs of our communities by graduating qualified, compassionate and inquisitive practitioners and researchers accomplished in health-care delivery and scholarship. We are committed to serving patients and populations by providing a rich interdisciplinary environment of learning, practice, research and public service for all our students and faculty.
The Faculty offers programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and also ongoing professional development activities. It trains physicians, dentists, dental hygienists, medical laboratory scientists and both clinical and basic sciences researchers.
Students learn in a variety of environments that include the classroom, the Internet, the lab, the hospital ward and ambulatory clinics, and community-based teaching sites throughout Alberta.
The Faculty is committed to evidence- and inquiry-based active learning that engages students in critical thinking as preparation for complex problem-solving in professional settings. Students learn through exploration by working on research projects and case studies, as well as from lecture-based instruction, podcasting, online forums, and new E-learning techniques.
The Faculty's HOMER online learning community allows students to access core curriculum materials from anywhere, anytime. Other innovations include one of Canada's most successful medical education programs for Aboriginal students, the Aboriginal Health Care Careers Program, and the Rural Integrated Community Clerkship program, which allows some third-year medical students to experience a rural practice for an extended period of time, effectively replacing the rotation-based Year 3 clerkship.
