Communications Office: Roles and Parameters

Our office has moved. Our new address is 4-142 Katz Group Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2E1

Corporate Identity

The Communications team assumes the lead in maintaining the integrity of and growing equity in the corporate identity of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

Government & Stakeholder Relations

The Director of Communications works with the University of Alberta's Office of Government and Corporate Relations to promote the significance of academic medicine.

Interactive Communications

The Communications team is responsible for the Faculty’s electronic and online vehicles. We work in partnership with others internally (for example, FoMD Information Technologies) and externally to develop and maintain these communication channels.

Internal Communications

Each member of the Faculty and staff is responsible for communicating frequently and effectively with one another. However, it is the role of the Communications team to develop standardized processes and channels for faculty-wide communications.

Issues Management

The role of the Communications team is to identify and manage issues that may have an impact on the reputation of the Faculty and its members. Working with others, both internally and externally, we manage such issues as they arise and, at times, speak for the Faculty.

Marketing

The Communications office oversees brand consistency, integrity and market identification.

Media Relations

The Communications office directs a proactive media relations plan to strengthen and build the Faculty's profile provincially, nationally and internationally. We respond to media requests for information and for interviews with faculty members. We provide media training and support. We execute media events including news conferences, media availabilities and one-on-one interviews. We may also speak for the Faculty.

Our media relations associate can be reached at 780.399.7505 or media@med.ualberta.ca.

Public Affairs

The Communications team works with faculty members and staff, the University of Alberta’s Office of the Vice-President (External Relations) and the University of Alberta Office of Public Affairs to develop a comprehensive public affairs plan. We play a co-ordinating role in the implementation of the plan.

Public Relations

Members of the Communications team participate - sometimes as leaders, sometimes as members - on committees working on a variety of projects that have a promotional element to them. Our participation ensures consistent branding and messaging.
