Interim Dean

Dr. Verna Yiu

Dr. Verna Yiu is a professor and the divisional director of pediatric nephrology in the Department of Pediatrics. After completion of her MD and pediatrics residency training at the University of Alberta, she obtained her pediatric nephrology residency training at Harvard University's Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Yiu joined the medical faculty at the University of Alberta in 1994 and was one of two pediatric nephrologists serving Edmonton and northern Alberta for eight years. She served as site leader for Stollery Children's Hospital from 1997 to 2000, and was the assistant dean for student affairs from 2000 to 2008. While Dr. Yiu was in this role, she established the first program in Canada to support and promote humanism in medicine. In 2004, she helped to establish the Arts and Humanities in Health and Medicine program. She remains active in her clinical and teaching roles. Her research interests are in the areas of thrombotic microangiopathies and pediatric hypertension. She presently chairs the Specialty Committee for Nephrology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is on the advisory board of the Gold Humanism Honors Society for the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
